How Is The Corona Virus Affecting Human Rights?
Although the recent spread of the Corona Virus has been devastating, besides affecting the physical health of an individual, the panic and misinformation about it affect human rights as well. Here is how the Corona Virus is affecting human rights:
1. Fear & Panic Causing Segregation
One of the biggest effects the Corona Virus had on human rights is perhaps, the fear and panic that people have started to feel towards the Asian community. Unfortunately, blinded by the panic and misinformation about the virus, many people have seen fit to avoid any Asian person, in any way possible as a precaution of catching the Corona Virus. Such behaviors are rude and unnecessary, and they stern only from misinformation! We are so sad to notice that many people take the misinformation seriously and react extremely such as running in the opposite direction whenever they encounter a person with Asian heritage.
Although the Corona Virus origin was in China, Wuhan, that doesn’t mean that the Corona Virus is carried by any individual with Asian heritage. There is no need to run from the Asian community because the virus doesn’t discriminate by race.
Don’t cause racial segregation because, in the end, that won’t play a big role in whether you get the Corona Virus or not. Instead, keep away from sick people, regardless of race, wash your hands more often, and keep your hands away from your face!
2. Racism & Xenophobia
From one extreme to the other, there have been a lot of incidents where segregation took a quite opposite turn – violence, oppression, and spikes in racism. A lot of incidents where people from Asian heritage have been attacked verbally, physically or both have been reported. From egg pelting, bullying at school or open verbal assaults against anyone from Asian heritage – the situation is getting out of hand.
We understand that many people are on edge with the outbreaks of the Corona Virus, however, breaking the human rights, causing harm to another human being simply because of their race, must stop! Venting your frustrations will only make the situation worse. Remember to remain respectful, calm and well-informed!
3. Spreading Fake News & Disinformation
Speaking of being well-informed, it’s very important to NOT believe everything you read off the internet. Social media can often cause a lot of news to go viral, whether they are authentic or not. Which is why it’s best to get your information always from reliable sources such as the WHO! After all, it’s everyone right to get true information, that is needed to further protect themselves from the virus outbreak.
