Bill Cosby Released from Prison after Sexual Assault Conviction is Overturned

Bill Cosby, an American stand-up comedian, actor, comedian, and author is free. On Wednesday, Cosby walked into freedom after Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court overturned his conviction on indecent assault.

Bill Cosby had been accused of drugging and subsequently molesting a former employee of Temple University by the name Andrea Constand at his estate back in 2004.

1n 2015, Cosby faced charges and arrest for the alleged attack on Andrea Constand. He was arrested a few days before the expiration date of the 12-year statute limitations. All along though, Cosby maintained that his contact with Andrea Constand had been on a consensual basis.

The Keystone State’s Supreme Court has tossed Cosby’s conviction following an agreement that Cosby managed to strike with a prior prosecutor, and which prevents Cosby from facing any further criminal charges in the case. Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruling further barred any form of retrial.

The 83-year-old comedian/actor was two years into his three-to-10 year sentence behind bars.

"Cosby was found guilty by a jury and now goes free on a procedural issue that is irrelevant to the facts of the crime," said District Attorney Kevin Steele in a statement Wednesday. "My hope is that this decision will not dampen the reporting of sexual assaults by victims."

While the District Attorney noted that Bill Cosby was now free on a procedural issue, on Wednesday, the actor/comedian did maintain his innocence on social media.

"I have never changed my stance nor my story. I have always maintained my innocence. Thank you to all my fans, supporters and friends who stood by me through this ordeal. Special thanks to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for upholding the rule of law. #BillCosby," Cosby posted on Twitter from his account.

Little support weighed in after Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court overturned Cosby’s conviction for sexual assault, with many feeling dissatisfied with the ruling.

Phylicia Rashad, Cosby’s former castmate who played Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show wrote the following on her Twitter account:

FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected! - Phylicia Rashad

However, Rashad’s opinion wasn’t a popular one with many artists, journalists, and activists criticizing Rashad, Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court, and other celebrities such as rapper 50 Cent, who’ve been vocal in supporting Bill Cosby despite being accused by more than 60 women of sexual assault.

"For a woman who has been sexually assaulted, that gives her a voice that she may not have," said Angelica Gianchandani who happens to be practitioner in residence for the brand marketing and the executive MBA programs at the University of New Haven. "For someone with no money, fame or influence, it can become a powerful platform where they can demand justice."

But there are a number of conspiracy theories suggesting that Cosby was framed and that there’s too much false information out there meant to spread misinformation about Bill Cosby. For instance, there’s a rumor going round on social media since 2016 suggesting that Cosby was framed by the Dark Powerful Forces in order to prevent him from purchasing TV network NBC.

But as of now, Bill Cosby is enjoying his freedom in his home near Philadelphia.
